The Indian National Congress, once a vocal critic of the Adani Group’s business practices, has surprisingly chosen to remain tight-lipped on a major investment proposal by the conglomerate in Telangana, a state currently governed by the party. This strategic silence has raised eyebrows across the political spectrum, with many questioning the party’s commitment to its stated principles of transparency and accountability.
The Adani Group, led by billionaire Gautam Adani, has proposed a massive ₹30,000 crore investment in Telangana to set up an integrated alumina complex and a coal-fired power plant. The project, if approved, would be one of the largest investments in the state’s history and is expected to create thousands of jobs. However, it has also sparked concerns about environmental damage and the potential displacement of local communities.
Despite being in the opposition at the national level, the Congress currently holds power in Telangana through a coalition with other regional parties. This has put the party in a peculiar position, caught between its stated opposition to the Adani Group’s environmental record and the potential economic benefits of the proposed project for its key electoral ally, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).
When asked about the Adani proposal by journalists, Congress leaders in Telangana have largely dodged the question. Some have offered vague statements about the need for “careful consideration” and “due diligence,” while others have simply refused to comment. This lack of clarity has fueled speculation that the party is divided on the issue, with some leaders privately expressing concerns about the environmental impact while others are more focused on the potential economic benefits.
Analysts suggest that the Congress’s silence on the Adani issue is likely a calculated move aimed at balancing its national and state-level political interests. By avoiding taking a firm stance on the project, the party hopes to avoid alienating either its national constituency, which is generally critical of the Adani Group, or its key ally in Telangana, the TRS, which is keen to see the project go ahead.

Critics argue that the party cannot claim to be the champion of environmental protection and social justice while remaining silent on such a controversial project.
