Neeraj Chopra’s attention to detail is like a Formula One driver’s: Coach Dr Klaus Bartonietz

Neeraj Chopra’s coach, Dr. Klaus Bartonietz, sheds light on Chopra’s training regimen and preparations leading up to the World Championships. With the aim of enhancing his performance, Chopra has relocated to Saarbrücken, Germany, where he will train in an outdoor stadium and an indoor facility housing a gymnasium. Despite securing first place in the Diamond League in Lausanne, Chopra acknowledges that his fitness levels are not optimal due to a recent muscle strain. Determined to excel at the World Championships, Chopra emphasizes the need to work on his fitness.

Bartonietz praises Chopra’s resilience in Lausanne, which served as a preview of the challenges he will face in the upcoming World Championships. Chopra demonstrated caution initially, as he had missed competitions and high-intensity training sessions. Recognizing the need for comprehensive improvement, Bartonietz plans to focus on enhancing Chopra’s strength, speed, and technique over the next six weeks.

In Lausanne, the target was an 88-meter throw, but Chopra achieved 87.66 meters. Initially, the injury weighed on Chopra’s mind, impeding his performance. However, as the competition progressed, he gained confidence and delivered better throws. The abductor muscle strain, which occurred unexpectedly during a relatively moderate training session, came as a surprise to Bartonietz, who highlights the complex and unnatural movements involved in javelin throwing.

After Saarbrücken, Chopra will shift his training base to Magglingen, Switzerland, to further refine his strength, speed, and technique before the World Championships in Budapest. Bartonietz commends Chopra for his meticulous approach to training, comparing it to that of a Formula One driver who comprehends the intricacies of their vehicle. Chopra’s dedication, combined with his receptive attitude towards learning, contributes to making his training sessions more efficient.

Bartonietz attributes Chopra’s consistent top-three finishes to his diligent work ethic, mental fortitude, and modesty. Chopra’s grounded nature and understanding of his strengths and weaknesses further contribute to his success. Notably, Chopra and Bartonietz refrain from discussing the “90-meter question” that Chopra is frequently asked, recognizing it as a mere statistical benchmark rather than a significant focus
