Women heads of families who have been adversely affected by the Union government’s steep hike in cooking gas prices and the overall price hike will benefit greatly from the scheme, said state finance minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan.
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government will implement the ruling DMK’s promise of Rs 1,000 a month to help women heads of eligible households from September this year and an amount of Rs 7,000 crore has been earmarked in the state budget for FY24. .
“Women heads of families who have been adversely affected by the sharp hike in cooking gas prices by the Union government and the overall rise in prices will benefit greatly from this scheme,” said state finance minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan.
Interestingly, the DMK party has also made a promise of a subsidy of Rs 100 per cooking gas cylinder.
Presenting the 2023-24 budget, Rajan said, “Operational guidelines detailing eligibility for benefits under this scheme will be drawn up and published soon.”
He said that an amount of Rs 7,000 crore has been allocated in the budget for this scheme which will be a game changer in the socio-economic life of women in the state.
Opposition parties in the state criticized the DMK government for failing to fulfill its election promise of providing Rs 1,000 per month to women.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin recently said that financial assistance of Rs 1,000 per month to women would find a mention in the state budget for 2023-24.
